Swara ear training over Sa.
Learn to name the twelve swaras of Hindustani music by ear, each one heard against Sa.
A drone sets Sa. One swara plays, you name it, and it resolves to Sa. Sa changes on every question, so the only thing that stays the same is the distance from Sa to each swara. That distance is what you learn.
Jivari is in development for iPhone. The Android version follows once Vyntel’s Google Play developer account is verified.

One session, about 12 minutes
- Tuning in
- The drone plays alone and sets Sa. No sound starts until you tap.
- Listen first
- Each new swara is played with its name and resolves to Sa before you are asked to name it.
- Pair drill
- A swara being introduced is drilled against its partner, komal Ni against Ni, tivra Ma against Ma. So is any pair you keep mixing up.
- Questions
- One swara at a time, mixed across your level. Feedback names the swara that played and the one you chose, and you hear both resolve.
- Summary
- Right answers, accuracy and median answer time for each swara, and what the next level needs.

You move up when every swara at your level is at 85% or better over its last 30 answers, with a median answer time under 2.5 seconds, and is still right on a Sa you have not practised on.
The Full ladder also includes Test mode, with retests after 1, 7 and 30 days, and Pocket mode, which asks and answers by sound alone. Test, Pocket and the screens for levels 10 to 12 are still being built. There is no subscription, no advertising and no account, and Family Sharing is on.
Just intonation, in cents
Every sound is synthesized on the phone; there are no recordings. Just intonation is the default. Equal temperament, which matches a harmonium, is one switch in Settings, where the same table is shown.
Sa is set by harmonium key, from safed 1 (C) to safed 7 (B). The defaults are kali 1 (C♯) for a male voice and kali 5 (A♯) for a female voice. Each swara sounds for 0.8, 2 or 5 seconds, as you choose.

Your practice stays on the phone
Jivari has no account, no analytics and no advertising, and it makes no network connections of its own. Every answer you give is kept in a log on your device, and your progress is worked out from that log. Purchases go through the App Store.
